EFFECT OF PHYSICOCHEMICAL AND BIOLOGICAL PARAMETERS FOR MODEL SIMULATION ON THE QUALITY OF WATER RESERVOIR (TRIBUTARIES) ALONG NUHU BAMALLI POLYTECHNIC ZARIA
Abstract
This study investigated the physiochemical and bacteriological activities in Nuhu Bamalli reservoir. This is considered to be a potential pond for development of water treatment plant. A study was considered for the development of water quality index for portable water supply in the polytechnic. Samples were labelled (A1, B1- and C1) to ascertain the Key parameters of the pond such as pH, Temperature, Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), Turbidity, Nitrate-Nitrogen (NO3), Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD), Dissolved Oxygen (DO), temperature, turbidity, colour and taste using standard method. Atomic absorption spectrometer machine was used to determine heavy metals, and coliform counts for bacteriological effects. The study was repeatedly carried out throughout the year at different seasons (raining season, dry season and Harmattan season). The samples were analysed and established  range values of: (pH 6.5–8.5, TDS 108–234 mg L−1, Turbidity 432–452 NTU, Nitrate-Nitrogen 90-110 mg L−1, BOD 15–25 mg L−1, COD 70-80 and DO 90-100 mg L−1), all were found to be  above threshold values of World Health Organisation standard and equally do not conform with Nigerian Standard for Drinking Water Quality except for some parameters such as: pH (7.8, 6.8 & 6.4), and Temperature (24, 23 & 24 0C) in samples A1, B1 and C1 respectively were within allowable standards. The values recorded are found not to be satisfactory for all forms of metabolic activities required for which the samples might be intended for usage. as shown in figure 1. The use of Hec-crass model was to monitor the spatial evolution of the flow characteristics and flow dynamics of the area. Generally, the water quality depends on its chemical and microbiological condition, in the areas with penetrable formations and agricultural activity, the nitrates presence was observed in relatively stable concentrations in time. However, it was observed that the water quality was found to be moderate in the season of winter and poor to unsuitable for human consumption in the season of raining. The fall in the quality of water in raining season was due to poor sanitation, turbulent flow, soil erosion and high anthropogenic activities.
